Prato Borni - Your holiday resort

The name Prato Borni is Latin. The exact meaning is still not fully understood. It is believed that Prato is derived from meadow and Borni has its origins in the word "Borgne" which means headwaters, an area rich in springs. Prato Borni therefore most likely means "Meadow in the spring area"- an interpretation that is supported by the fact that four mountain streams meet in the closed Zermatt basin.

Prato Borni was documented as far back as the 12th century. On the oldest Swiss map dating back to 1495, the village at the foot of the Matterhorn is mentioned as "Matt". In documentary notes from the 16th century, the village is already referenced to as "Zur Matt" and in an official municipal communication from 1831 the name Zermatt first appears.
